A Year-End and New Year Message

Oneness & Conditionalism 2025. 12. 19. 19:15

The end of one year and the beginning of another is not merely a point where time changes. It is a moment of spiritual transition in which we are called to reinterpret our lives and to realign our direction. Scripture does not view time as a simple cycle of repetition. God works within history, and human life is likewise called to move forward within the redemptive history of God. Therefore, Christians do not treat the turning of the year as a moment to be consumed by sentiment or temporary resolutions, but as an opportunity to design the future within faith.

Our understanding of time is clear. God is one, and He has fully revealed Himself in Jesus. The coming of Jesus, His cross, and His resurrection are not merely events of the past. They mark the beginning of the new creation. This new creation has already begun, and believers live in the reality of that new creation even now. Therefore, sending off a year is not simply an act of mourning what has passed or evaluating achievements. It is a spiritual decision to lay aside the old self, old ways of thinking, and old values, and to be re-established within the order of the new creation.

First, we must interpret the past year through faith. Life is not a chain of coincidences. Under the reign of the kingdom of God, every moment carries meaning. Even times that appeared to be failures, even seasons of suffering where no answers seemed visible, were part of the process by which we were being formed as citizens of God’s kingdom. This is not an attitude that romanticizes the past. It is a posture of faith that trusts God’s sovereignty and purpose, and in doing so, becomes free from being bound by the past.

Next, our vision for the new year must be firmly grounded in resurrection faith. From the perspective of conditional immortality, hope is not a vague idea of the soul continuing indefinitely. Biblical hope is the life God has promised—the life of resurrection. This hope is not comfort postponed to the distant future; it is a power that reshapes our present life. To live the new year does not mean merely expecting better circumstances. It means choosing to live today as those who possess resurrection life. We do not calculate the future by death and emptiness, but set the direction of our lives by the life God gives.

Furthermore, designing the future must not drift toward personal success or self-fulfillment as its center. The kingdom of God has already come in Jesus, and we have been called as citizens of that kingdom. Therefore, our goals for the new year must align with the values of God’s kingdom. Justice, truth, love, responsibility, and a holy way of life must take a clear place within our plans. Faith does not end with resolutions made on the first day of the year. Living out God’s reign through daily choices and attitudes is what it means to live as people of the kingdom.

Finally, the end of a year and the beginning of a new one is a time to relearn hope. The world consumes hope amid repeated failures and anxiety, but Christians receive renewed hope in the risen Jesus. God is still at work, and His new creation does not cease. Therefore, we design the future not with fear, but with faith; not with resignation, but with hope.

Now we can confess this with confidence.

The past year was held in the hands of God.

The coming year also stands under His reign.

Therefore, we are not shaken.

We move forward with hope, toward the life of the new creation.
